Part of the fun of supporting an indie book app built by 2 people is that it has personality!

No, we’re not talking about 🐣. In software, an easter egg is an intentional hidden message, image, or secret feature. We’ve got a few on Pagebound:

If you DNF a book and then leave a review, we add a DNF tag to your review automatically. Yes, your rating means something different if you didn’t finish the book!

We love our emojis, clearly, and you can actually use them to discover new books. On web, you’ll find an option to “browse by emoji.” Type in an emoji to generate a list of ~10 random books with that emoji most commonly used in reviews. Refresh to get a new list. Great if you’re a mood reader or if you just like games of chance.

You’ll also find an “emoji of the day” on Discover Books & Lists to surface lesser known works. The emoji selection is related to the month: black cats and skulls for October, holly and presents for December. We were thrilled to see the impact of this feature highlighted in Pagebound Club this week:

You’ll also find easter eggs on your own profile. You can unlock additional avatars by leveling up on Pagebound. On Level 2, you get access to Rooney (Lucy’s doggo) and Binx (Jennifer’s cat):

On Level 3, you unlock 2 more dragon avatars. For Level 4, you unlock our food avatar pack: a chili pepper, croissant, and a bowl of rice.

You’ve probably noticed some untraditional error and success messages as well—we like to have our fun 🙃
